Elbow Conditions

Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

“Golfer’s Elbow” is a term used to describe pain over the medial (inside) aspect of the elbow. Golfer’s elbow causes pain in the elbow especially when wrist flexion and forearm extension.

Conservative treatment of Golfer’s Elbow includes activity modification, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatories. Golfer’s Elbow typically responds well to conservative treatment.

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

“Tennis Elbow” is a term used to describe pain over the lateral (outside) aspect of the elbow. Tennis elbow causes pain in the elbow, especially when attempting to grip something or when extending the wrist.

Conservative treatment of Tennis Elbow includes activity modification, physical therapy, an elbow strap, anti-inflammatories, and an injection of corticosteroid. Tennis elbow typically improves greatly with conservative treatment.

Olecranon Bursitis

Bursa are fluid filled sacs that aid in protecting and cushioning bony prominences such as the tip of the elbow bone (olecranon). The bursa can become inflamed and tender. Olecranon bursitis can be caused by inflammation, gout, trauma and in some cases an infection. Olecranon bursitis causes swelling over the elbow and in some instances pain.

Conservative treatment of Olecranon Bursitis includes activity modification, an elbow pad and anti-inflammatories. In some cases, bursa can be aspirated which will remove the extra fluid.
